Dear Charlie…

If I’m dealing with somebody
Who judges me unfairly,

In customer service who’s
Ends meet – barely,

A moronic
Part of me
lacks empathy.

The
Black woman
Looking back at me

I wonder is she there
For less than other employees?

Because of
Absurd evaluation,

Her excellence
Might be devalued.

Or is she there
After her third job,

Because of
This idiot’s economy?

Why can’t a nation built upon
Abuse and oppression
Understand why we need
Tools like
Affirmative action?

If I see a Black pilot…
I wonder, “Why’s it so rare?”

I’m going to be like…
“What did he go through,
so he could be there?”

Boy,
This world’s so frustrating –
sometimes so sad.

I hope,
He got a fair shot.
Like others had.

He’s qualified,
Likely more –
Knowing current fads.

Whispers coming from the seats
Like old southern granddads.

It’s still
Happening all the time
Racists don’t say N-word In light.

They say it subcutaneously.
In urban America,
From the other side of the street.

Angry klansman once went
Prowling…
They watched
Blacks go around
Simply surviving…

For fun
They’d wait
To go target
A Black man to drag behind a truck.

They were the worst sort of
white people, that’s a fact.

We thought we’d lived past that.
It’s happening more and more.
Just like it did before.

Arrogance is hate’s foundation.
Compassion is wisdom’s gate.

You had the one,
Mocked the other.

Yet your angry words of hate,
Deserved that early grave.

It’s still not fair you’re gone.
Yet the hubris carries on.
Prove me wrong.
