Curious and Sincere

I began drawing when I was very young. The Incredible Hulk end credits often triggered the desire. I thought, for a long time, I wanted to be a comic artist. John Bryne and George Pérez built worlds and characters with their lines. I envied their skill. I’d flip through old Marvel Universe issues and draw the iconically-posed heroes before and after class. I moved a lot; this was a sure-fire way to find like-minded kids in my classes.

I spent a long time trying to fit into the “penciller” fame. I struggled. It’s a tough job. My difficulty went a bit deeper than that, though. I’d typically lose interest in every story I drew by page 3. I felt like failure and a flake after ending so many collaborations due to a lack of interest I just couldn’t jumpstart.

I tried to stop drawing; it felt like such a massive effort for no success. A few friends found my stories interesting or funny. I ran into a few other creative folks who encouraged me to try writing. I did that for nearly a decade. I wrote pitches for tv series, chapter books, and animated films; none of them moved beyond the writing stage. After a while, I drifted back to drawing.

I worked on a few projects for independent comic and role-playing game publishers. Writing isn’t the same discipline as drawing. Writing consistently, for me, though, gave me chops. I wasn’t so chained to inspiration or excitement. I found I could work simply to complete a project. There’s nothing like holding a “thing” you’ve made. I used to think holding a single complete drawing was intoxicating. Receiving my first proof copy of a full book really overwhelmed me.

I’ve been chasing the feeling of holding another complete thing since then.

My work is fairly diverse. Science fiction comedy. Horror. Fantasy.

The common thread isn’t a genré. It’s the sincerity and curiosity I pour in. Reading my books, pitches, poems, and essays is the simplest way to know me.
